Kudret Özersay for president?

Turkish Cypriot negotiator Kudret Özersay has said that he is ready to take on any assignment on behalf of the Turkish Cypriot community. Özersay was speaking on a local TV programme this morning, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.

Noting that he has never been aligned with any political party, Özersay said he would run for the presidency if needed, in order to do more for the community.  “I have been getting this question about the presidency for some time now and I will give the same answer I have been giving each time I have been asked. My candidacy is not out of question. So I am ready to serve this community at any level possible. Currently I am assigned to a position. I have never been a member of any political party and I have worked with all three of our presidents and have never done that for personal benefits. I think everyone who has observed [me] could see this. I have only done my job in order to serve the interests of this country. I have used my experience to contribute to country’s interest. If I feel that I can contribute further by running for the presidency then why not? My candidacy is a possibility; I am considering running for the presidential elections”, said Özersay.

The next presidential elections will be in 2015.

Touching upon the negotiations, Özersay said that there are both negative and positive developments. He also said that he is trying to relay any developments to the public in the right way:

“If you don’t communicate the developments correctly and give artificial hopes than people can feel disappointed later. The Joint Declaration was very positive but the lack of a road map is problematic”, added Özersay.
