Kudret Ozersay returns after South Africa visit

Turkish Cypriot negotiator Kudret Ozersay has returned to Cyprus after completing his contacts in South Africa.

Ozersay was in South Africa along with his Greek Cypriot counterpart Andreas Mavroyiannis where both men attended a series of meetings and workshops organised by Transformation Initiative and the UN Development Programme. They met with experienced politicians and diplomats who had taken part in negotiating the end of apartheid in South Africa.

BRTK news reports that Ozersay, accompanied by members of the negotiating team and Presidential Chief of Political Affairs Gunes Onar returned to Cyprus yesterday morning.

Commenting on Jeffrey Feltman’s, visit to Cyprus which is scheduled for May 5th, Ozersay said “We would be pleased if he attends the meeting on May 6th”. This is the date when substantive negotiations in the Cyprus talks begin.

The UN has rejected speculation that Feltman, who is the UN Under-Secretary-General and head of the Department of Political Affairs, might take up the post of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for Cyprus, vacated by Alexander Downer last month. Downer has been assigned as Australian High Commissioner in London.
