Kyrenia hosted a lively “Tourism Festival” as part of Tourism Week celebrations on Saturday, Yeniduzen reports.
The festival was organised by the Deputy Prime Ministry and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, with support from Kyrenia Municipality, and took place at Kyrenia Old Harbour and continued late into the night. The highlight was the official reopening of the old harbour following extensive restoration and renovation works that began in December 2022.
The festival kicked off with a colourful procession from Kyrenia’s Ramadan Cemil Square to the old harbour at 11am. The public enjoyed opening speeches and festivities at the harbour entrance stage.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul praised the collaborative efforts between the Ministry and the Municipality, highlighting how their projects transformed the harbour and surrounding areas, even during challenging times. He emphasised the importance of stronger cooperation between local and central governments for greater national progress.
Şenkul also expressed gratitude to those involved in amending municipal laws, believing that these changes will pave the way for even better initiatives.
The Kyrenia Tourism Festival featured a diverse range of activities throughout the day, including concerts, dances, theatre performances, fashion shows, guided tours of the old harbour and castle, caricature drawing, and music performances across three stages.
Visitors enjoyed complimentary refreshments and had the opportunity to purchase traditional Turkish Cypriot food, drinks, and handicrafts at various stalls throughout the festival.
The festival concluded with an evening concert by Fikri Karayel at 9.30 pm marking the end of a successful and enjoyable event celebrating Kyrenia’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant tourism sector.
