‘Kyrenia Initiative’ group demand demolition of hotel

Following their successful challenge of the Kyrenia building degree, the “Kyrenia Initiative” group held a protest on board a yacht which sailed past the uncompleted Kaya Artemis hotel, built on the foundations of the old Zeyco olive oil factory in Karaoğlanoğlu. The protesters held up placards demanding that that the building be demolished.

The appeal, was led by former Cyprus negotiator and leader of the Peoples’ Party (HP) Kudret Ozersay against the coalition government’s revised planning decree. This allowed the construction of high-rise buildings (seven storeys), affecting communities from Karsiyaka which lies west of Kyrenia to Bahceli on the east side.

After the recent court decision, hotel owner Burhanettin Kaya expressed his anger at the outcome, roundly cursing everyone involved. He asked what they wanted and said that his life had been ruined.
