The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has announced an updated end-of-2023 population projection, estimating a total population of 476,214. The male population is projected at 257,789, with the female population expected to be 218,425, Kibris Postasi reported.
According to the Statistics Office, this new projection is based on the 2011 Housing and Population Census, incorporating recent migration data and updates from administrative records. The revised projection has been prepared using assumptions and indicators derived from these updates.
The statement further highlighted that the updated population forecast has been refined to meet both national and international requirements. A task force, including experts from the Turkish Statistical Institute, was involved in this work.
The following is the detailed population projection for the years 2019–2023:
2019: 227,056 males, 193,500 females, total 420,556
2020: 225,306 males, 194,504 females, total 419,810
2021: 242,381 males, 205,887 females, total 448,268
2022: 250,421 males, 212,326 females, total 462,747
2023: 257,789 males, 218,425 females, total 476,214
More Detailed Projections with the Full Establishment of the Address-Based Population Registration System
The statement explained that with the full implementation of the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS), more detailed projections will be possible. This system will provide up-to-date information on population size and characteristics at the local level.
Population projections are essential for policy development, the statement emphasised, noting that understanding current population trends and forecasting future population structures aids in creating well-informed and effective policies. These projections, which consider birth, death, and migration trends, are particularly useful for planning and administrative decisions during the intervals between censuses.
However, it was also noted that unforeseen changes in population – as seen globally – may result in discrepancies between projections and actual numbers. In the event of significant demographic shifts, the projections will be revised to reflect new trends.
