Law against homosexual acts repealed

The bill that repeals the law punishing homosexual acts in the TRNC, was repealed yesterday. Prior to this, lawbreakers could face up to five years jail.

The bill passed with 28 votes in favour and will be sent to President Eroglu who is expected to approve the bill within 15 days.

Members of the National Unity Party (UBP) took no part in the vote and one member of the Democratic party (DP) voted against.

Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Halkin Sesi’ reports that the Volunteers Organisation Platform stated that is against the repealing of the law, arguing that the amendment supports immorality.
