Leaders Have First Linked-up Mobile Phone Talk

Mobile telephony will now be accessible across the island. According to a statement by the United Nations, the first cross-island mobile telephone conference between the two Cypriot leaders was held at 12.45 pm under the auspices of UN Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar.

The leaders also talked about getting together at the first opportunity. The Cypriot community leaders announced the application of interoperability of mobile phones across the island to improve communication between communities and to bring all Cypriots together.

According to an announcement by Unficyp, the first call took place at 12:45 pm between the two leaders, and UN Special Envoy for Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar confirmed that the system was working.

The achievement of this confidence-building measure emphasises the importance of dialogue, trust and cooperation between the two sides”, a UN statement said.

During their first cross-island mobile phone conversation, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı and Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades discussed the possibility of meeting as soon as possible.
