Legal Problems Prevent Murder Suspect’s Extradition to TRNC

Legal problems are preventing the extradition of a murder suspect to North Cyprus.

North Cyprus News - Muhammad Salman23 year old Muhammad Salman was arrested in Limassol for illegally entering South Cyprus. Salman, a Pakistani national who has been living and working in the TRNC since 2015, is wanted on suspicion of murdering Hasan Isik Ozgocmen in Iskele on 30 September.

The Limassol police apprehended Salman, after his photograph was released by Turkish Cypriot media earlier this week with some reports suggesting that he might have fled south. Turkish Cypriot authorities are requesting through the UN that Salman be handed over for questioning in the north.

South Cyprus police are investigating the murder because reportedly, Salman admitted that he had murdered Ozgocmen. However, because the police have no evidence, they cannot proceed. Additionally, there is no legal precedence for the South Cyprus police to investigate a murder committed in the north.

It has been speculated that Salman may be deported instead.
