Lessons learned from Bellapais fire

After a serious fire destroyed a number of buildings in Bellapais in September, the Muhtar has called for immediate installation of fire hydrants and piping to protect other village homes and businesses.

The fire, which started in a restaurant, was accessible to emergency services who were able to tackle the blaze, but some locals are now worried about other parts of the village. Bellapais has a tight network of old, narrow and twisting roads which would have likely hampered or even denied access to fire service vehicles had the incident occurred elsewhere in the village.

At the time of writing, no work has yet begun on the installation of fire hydrants or their pipework.

In August of 2011, a serious fire also broke out in a ravine below the abbey.
