Local builders being sidelined by government

Head of the Turkish Cypriot building contractor’s union” (KTIMB) Cafer Gurcafer said that road building projects for the TRNC had been tendered in Ankara and had excluded local Turkish Cypriot companies.

Gurcafer, provided as an example the opening of the tender for the construction of the Lapta-Alsancak road and also for the Kyrenia-Lefkosa road, adding that the firms which attend the tenders opening in Turkey, use local companies as sub-contractors. “The majority of these companies, after completing the work do not pay the local companies”, Gurcafer said, adding that these firms to date, owe the Turkish Cypriot contractors the sum of 10 million TL.

Gurcafer warned the coalition government that they would not remain silent about this development, adding that if no measures are taken by the government to avert the same situation, they will have no choice other than going on strike.
