Mass demos held against proposed electricity price hikes

Earlier this week the main trades unions started a series of rolling demonstrations against the proposed 30% increase in electricity prices. They have promised these demonstrations will continue until the government withdraws its proposals.

Yesterday it was the turn of businesses as represented by the TRNC Chamber of Commerce to join in the protests.

Sixty organisations held mass demonstrations in five districts in protest against the electricity price increases. In Nicosia, a mass convoy of one hundred vehicles stopped traffic in front of parliament.

There were similar convoys in Kyrenia, Famagusta and Guzelyurt.

President of the Chamber of Commerce, Hurrem Tulga said that these demonstrations were just the beginning and would escalate.
