A very mild earthquake measuring 3.5 occurred in Famagusta today at 01.06, the Tuzla Earthquake Station reported.
A statement from the Meteorology Department said, “Today at 01.06 local time, approximately 19 km away from the Tuzla Earthquake Station affiliated with our department, a very mild earthquake with an instrumental magnitude of ML: 3.5 on the Richter scale was recorded. As a result of the initial assessment, it was determined that the epicentre of the earthquake was Famagusta at coordinates 35.08 north and 34.06 east, approximately 39 km deep”.
The last significant earthquake near Famagusta, Cyprus, occurred on January 21, 2021. This earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and struck off the coast of Cyprus, about 50 kilometres northwest of Famagusta. The earthquake was felt across the island, but there were no reports of serious damage or casualties.
Cyprus is located in a seismically active region, so earthquakes are not uncommon, although major ones are relatively rare. The island is near the boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, contributing to its seismic activity. [Ed.]
