Leader of the Democrat Party (DP) and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu, has vehemently denounced the recent aggressive actions by Greek Cypriots against the housing sector in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), BRTK reports.

Ataoğlu, who is also the Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Environment, issued a stern warning, asserting, “If these actions continue, there will undoubtedly be repercussions”.

In a statement released on Monday, Ataoğlu criticised the Greek Cypriot leadership for jeopardising efforts towards a fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue. He accused them of maintaining a hostile stance towards the TRNC housing sector, which he sees as part of their ongoing uncooperative behaviour.

Ataoğlu emphasised that past attacks by Greek Cypriots have been unsuccessful and reassured that the TRNC, in collaboration with Türkiye, will take all necessary steps to safeguard investors in Northern Cyprus.

These attacks will fail, just as all their previous attempts have failed”, he asserted.

He stressed the importance of resolving property issues through comprehensive agreements between the two states or via the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), as endorsed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Ataoğlu criticised the Greek Cypriots for deviating from these solutions, warning that such aggressive actions would only widen the gap between the two sides and obstruct any potential agreement.

Ataoğlu also condemned the Greek Cypriot administration for its hypocritical approach.

While freely using Turkish Cypriot properties in South Cyprus for their economic and social development, they impose embargoes and adopt hostile attitudes towards the Turkish Cypriot community.

He described this behaviour as unacceptable and criticised the European Union and the United Nations for their passive stance, which he believed emboldened the Greek Cypriots.

In conclusion, Ataoğlu called for an end to the attacks and urged international bodies to address the situation more proactively to foster a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue.
