The locations of military munitions stores should be moved away from areas where people live, Interior Minister Aysegul Baybars has said.
Referring to the series of explosions in the early hours of this morning caused by a fire at a munitions dump in a military zone opposite the Acapulco Hotel located east of Kyrenia, she said that they had returned from the brink of a great disaster.
The shocked residents of the hotel were evacuated; some had received minor injuries from broken glass shards.
The Prime Ministry has established an emergency committee and all necessary measures have been taken, said Baybars. There is currently no threat to security, she said.
A clean-up operation is now in progress.
Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Yeni Duzen’ also reports that there was damage to other properties in the blast area which also caused the death of wild life.
Update: The Kyrenia-Esentepe and Degirmenlik-Kyrenia roads have now been re-opened.
