Republican Turkish Party (CTP) representative, Fazilet Özdenefe, has been advocating for months that public officials and MPs should declare their assets. She has made several efforts to bring this issue to the forefront, Kibris Postasi reports.

Concerns About Parliamentary Procedures

Özdenefe, who is Deputy Speaker, criticised Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre for not addressing this important issue. She has raised a serious concern, alleging that Töre is attempting to approve past expenses without the necessary committee decisions. Özdenefe revealed that they have reported this situation to the Prosecutor’s Office and are currently awaiting their opinion.

Issues with Parliamentary Management

Özdenefe also pointed out that Speaker Töre travelled to Istanbul and took staff with him without the required committee approval. She argued that this is not ethical and emphasised the need for the Parliament to adhere strictly to legal procedures.

Comments on the ‘Famagusta’ TV Series

In a recent interview on Kibris Postasi TV’s “Sabah Postasi” with Gökhan Altıner, Özdenefe discussed the Netflix series ‘Famagusta,’ which covers the Turkish military intervention in Cyprus in 1974. She noted that propaganda and power struggles are no longer confined to physical conflicts but are also represented in media such as TV series and films. Özdenefe argued that these media can play a significant role in narrating and shaping historical perspectives.

The Importance of Accurate Representation

Özdenefe highlighted that the series aired earlier this year [and will air on Netflix on September 20] and expressed frustration with those who suddenly react to Turkish Cypriots being represented at the negotiating table. She stressed that it is crucial for stories to be presented accurately and objectively.

Advocacy for a Better Narrative

Emphasising the need for accurate and objective storytelling, Özdenefe said, “Instead of attacking, we need to tell our own story more precisely”. She believes that more effort is needed to ensure Turkish Cypriots are properly recognised on the global stage.

Concerns About National Security and Economic Conditions

Özdenefe also raised concerns about recent developments in Cyprus, including significant mistakes over the past four years and uncontrolled population growth. She noted that even those who prioritise safety and a quiet life are leaving the country.

Issues with Economic Oversight

She criticised the lack of control over certain groups with unknown sources of income, pointing out that there is no effective oversight of these finances.

Decline in Tourism Facilities

Finally, Özdenefe observed that there are no longer any 3 or 4-star hotels in Cyprus, with many having been converted to hostels or dormitories. She added that the remaining tourists are contributing to local businesses, which underscores the need for better management and infrastructure in the tourism sector.
