Nami reports on Brussels visit

Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Özdil Nami who is currently in Brussels for high level contacts and bilateral meetings evaluated his contacts to BRT. Nami said that he came together with Turkey’s EU Permanent Representative in Brussels during which they discussed ongoing work matters, BRTK reports.

Nami also announced that he had had a high level meeting at the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union Catherine Ashton’s office where the course of the Cyprus negotiations was discussed and the relationship between the EU and Turkish Cypriots were taken up.

As part of his contacts in Brussels, the Foreign Minister will also come together with the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle. Stating that he will be briefing Füle on the latest stage reached in the Cyprus talks and the problems being experienced in the process.

Nami said that the EU harmonisation process will also be discussed at the meeting. “Our work towards harmonising our laws with that of the EU is continuing. The Financial Aid Regulation and the Green Line Regulation are being implemented, but despite some positive aspects there are also some problems regarding the implementation of these two regulations. We will discuss these with Mr. Füle.

Following the joint statement, the President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso announced that work towards harmonising Turkish Cypriots with the EU will be increased to a higher level. We will discuss their views and our demands for making concrete steps on this issue”, Nami added. He also said that he would be coming together with permanent representatives of some EU countries at a working meeting.
