NAVTEX was just an excuse to leave the talks: Nami

TRNC Foreign Minister Ozdil Nami has said that the Greek Cypriot side has used the issuing of a NAVTEX by Turkey as an excuse to leave the negotiating table,

Speaking as a guest on Kanal Sim programme yesterday, he said that Turkey had waited for seven days before issuing the second NAVTEX (notice to mariners) that they would continue seismic surveys offshore Cyprus.

Nami said that the Turkish Cypriot side was waiting for the South’s leadership to return to the table, however, this never happened.

He added that Turkish seismic vessel ‘Barbaros Hayreddin Pasa’ still remained docked at Famagusta port, because they wanted to restart the negotiations. If the South should make a positive move, the TRNC was ready to reciprocate, he said.

Anastasiades used the NAVTEX as an excuse to leave the table, he said; the talks were failing prior to this and the reason was that the South did not accept the past convergences and they had not changed their position on this.

Nami was also critical of the Greek Cypriot side for wanting to postpone discussions about Cyprus’ hydrocarbons until after a solution was found. He blamed them for turning the matter into a discussion about “sovereignty”.
