Neglected public health system on verge of collapse

More medical doctors will resign, the Ministry of Health has been warned, after a court decision banning doctors working in the public health system from working privately was implemented.

Doctors were given six months to make their choice and the deadline expired on August 1st.

North Cyprus News - Dr Sila IncirliThe government ultimatum had resulted in resignations and more would follow, the head of the Turkish Cypriot Medical Association (Tıp-İş), Dr. Sila Usar Incirli has said.

She noted that over the past seven months, 14 doctors working in public hospitals had resigned over working conditions. Two departments at the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu state hospital in Lefkoşa had been closed through a lack of staff.

Dr. Incirli warned of the dangerous outcome of the ministry’s decision and said that most importantly, people’s health was at risk.
