Negotiations will continue after South’s elections: Talat

A solution outside UN parameters was not possible and such solutions would be against Turkish Cypriot interests, former Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat has said.

Talat told Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Yeni Bakis’ that the Cyprus negotiations would resume after the Greek Cypriot presidential elections: “I have said it in the past; negotiating during an election period would be hard”, he stated.

Referring to the gas drilling offshore Cyprus, Talat said that “this constituted a very dangerous initiative that usurped the Turkish Cypriots’ rights and would cause reactions from both Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots”.

He also expressed the opinion that gas drilling should have started following a solution to the Cyprus problem.
