Negotiators hold marathon meeting to discuss CBMs

Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ozdil Nami met with his Greek Cypriot counterpart Andreas Mavroyiannis for seven hours on Friday to agree on ‘low politics’ confidence-building measures (CBMs). Sources say that the atmosphere of the meeting was very positive.

The two negotiators will continue their work on Monday, ahead of a meeting on Thursday between Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci, where they will announce the first in a series of CBMs.

According to Greek Cypriot daily ‘Kathimerini’, among the measures agreed so far, are the opening of a new crossing point at Paphos Gate in the walled city of Nicosia and the operation of a common street market at the site.

In addition, the paper said that the opening of the Athienou-Piroi crossing point is also expected to be announced after Thursday’s meeting. Citing unnamed sources, ‘Kathimerini’ reported that work on repairing the old Athienou-Piroi road is already underway.

Athienou/Kiracikoy is a village in the Larnaca District. It is one of only four villages located within the UN Buffer Zone, the other three being Pyla/Pyle, Troulloi and Deneia/Denya.
