SOS Children’s Village has launched a social media campaign in the lead up to Christmas and New Year, with the hashtag #NeverTooOldForChristmas.
The charity, which since 1993, has provided family based care to children who have lost, or are at risk of losing, the care of their families is inviting the public to release their inner child this Christmas.
As a continuation of SOS’s Christmas campaign launched at the beginning of the month, and to raise awareness, social media users young and old are being asked to take ‘selfies’ in the festive spirit and post their photos and videos.
The first supporters of the social media campaign were two of North Cyprus’s most popular journalists Serhat İncirli and Hasan Hastürer.
Donning their Santa hats, journalists Hasan Hastürer and Serhat İncirli took to Facebook and Twitter on Monday December 21, to share their pictures and hashtag to call for support.
Hasan Hastürer said: “Childhood is ageless, not just at New Year, but always”.
According to a child analysis study, there are 6,870 children at risk in the TRNC.
Out of these, 17% do not have access to a healthy meal; 25.5% do not have a chance to play; more than 25% are left vulnerable to physical and verbal assault on the streets; while almost 10% do not have a desk to do their homework.
SOS Children’s Village asks for the support of the whole community to help bring a Happy New Year to children in care.
“Christmas and New Year is a time to share happy moments with close ones, tuck into a feast together, and to give children joy with gifts…all in the warmth of a loving home,” said Fundraiser Şirin Damdelen.
“However, thousands of children in Northern Cyprus have – and may never – experience this joy.
