A new book called “Substance Abuse in Northern Cyprus, Trends, Risks, and Interventions” was published in collaboration with the Prime Ministry Anti-Drug Commission and various civil society organisations. The launch event, held at the Acapulco Hotel, was attended by the book’s contributors, including academics and representatives of these organisations, BRTK reported.
President of the Anti-Drug Commission, Teyfide Tecel Hatipoğlu, highlighted that the book is a valuable resource in the fight against substance addiction* in North Cyprus. She thanked everyone involved in its creation, noting that it includes important scientific data on the onset, types, and consequences of substance addiction.
Soner Yıldırım, a Police Chief from Turkey’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, shared examples of how Turkey combats drug use. He stressed that North Cyprus can achieve effective results in fighting substance abuse if all parts of society work together.
Editors Professor Dr. Nebile Dağlıoğlu and Dr. Sevcan Kılınç Akıncı called the book a significant milestone. Sakine Aydın, Secretary General of the Tangül Çağıner Children’s Aid Foundation, emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to combat addiction for a healthier society. Meryem Özkurt, from the Turkish Cypriot Entrepreneurial Women’s Association and Director of Bayrak Radio and Television ( BRTK), pointed out that addiction is a major societal problem. She suggested using public service announcements to raise awareness through the media.
The event concluded with the presentation of 10 academic and statistical studies that contributed to the book.
*Substance abuse is a growing concern in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Like many regions worldwide, TRNC has seen an increase in drug use, particularly among young people. Factors contributing to this rise include increased availability of drugs, social and economic challenges, and the influence of global trends.
*Efforts to address this problem are ongoing, with government bodies, such as the Prime Ministry Anti-Drug Commission, and various civil society organisations actively working to combat substance abuse through education, prevention programs, and rehabilitation services. The recent release of the book on substance abuse in Northern Cyprus highlights these efforts and serves as a resource to better understand and address the issue. However, the problem remains significant, and continued action is needed to mitigate its impact on society. [Ed.]
