One of the objectives of the interim government led by Prime Minister Sibel Siber is to increase measures to protect the environment. Her ministers have already revoked the decision of the last government to build petrol storage plants at Kalecik and the Karpaz.
Now the government is working with environmental groups to extend environmentally protected areas in the Karpaz.
The proposal is to focus specifically on three areas around Dipkarpaz and Erenkoy. The funding for these projects will come from the joint EU and UN sponsored programme of grants.
These projects are planned to be completed by May 2014 and it is hoped will preserve the local environment, local cultures and provide information for visitors.
