Council workers union head Savas Bozat said that no rubbish had been collected in the capital for a week. This was in protest at not being paid.
Piles of rubbish are again beginning to build up in the streets.
Yesterday, a guide escorting some English tourists around the capital said that it was a disgrace. Some tourists said that they were amazed that such a historical city should be treated so badly.
Mr Bozat declared that while wages were not paid, rubbish would not be collected. He pointed out that wages for January, February or March this year had still not been paid.
This is a note of reality which contrasts with the rosy election propaganda being delivered by the candidates in the elections for Mayor to be held next month.
