Nicosia medical waste hazard

Medical waste from the Nicosia State hospital has not been collected for months.

It is now reaching alarming proportions and poses a danger to public health. There is a risk that unless this waste is disposed of it will seep into nearby river beds. Also as the summer months approach, flies will multiply and help transmit disease.

Normally medical waste from the hospital would be incinerated or buried. However it seems that normal procedures are being ignored and that bags of syringes, needles and other items are being thrown away in plastic bags. Used needles should normally be stored in hard containers to avoid injury or contamination.
