No grounds to prosecute Atalay

It has been decided that there are no grounds to prosecute Chief Mufti Dr. Talip Atalay who was arrested in Mersin on July 7, 2017, on suspicion of having links with the Fethullahist organisation.

Dr. Atalay who is Head of Religious Affairs in North Cyprus, was released and allowed to return to the TRNC on licence.

Following investigations, it was determined that Atalay was not on the list of the encrypted communication programme Bylock, said to be used by members of the organisation, which has now been deemed to be behind the attempted coup in Turkey on 9 July last year.

*Prime Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun wrote to President Mustafa Akinci asking him to remove Atalay from his post. However, the president refused to do so because he said there was no reason given as to why Atalay should be fired.
