No taxi permits for votes

Over the past week there have been press stories about the large numbers of new taxi permits being granted. The claim is that these are being offered as rewards for voting for the ruling UBP party in the early elections of July 28th.

Today, Meftun Orkun, a director from the Minstry of the Interior issued a press statement. He says that the press claims are entirely misleading and he took particular aim at the ‘Yeniduzen‘ newspaper which claims that 250 new taxi permits have been granted.

Mr Orkun says that the newspaper did not contact his ministry to get the real facts and published the stories in a biased manner. He also maintains that the ‘Yeniduzen‘ newspaper is an organ of the CTP, the main opposition party. He feels that they are publishing these stories to create resentment among taxi drivers.
