According to the union President Ibrahim Özgöçmen, they are striking because of unresolved issues related to their working conditions and staffing. Specifically, the union is upset that the Ministry of Health has not responded to their demands regarding problems in the healthcare system, particularly the use of temporary workers. They feel that the nursing profession is being undermined, and their grievances—such as being overworked or concerns about the quality of healthcare due to inadequate staffing—are not being addressed.
Özgöçmen emphasised that their profession is being disrespected and used as political leverage, which they strongly oppose. Despite allowing time for the Ministry to resolve these issues and being open to dialogue, no official response has been given. Their main priority is ensuring quality healthcare for the public, but they believe they have been forced into action after efforts at compromise failed.
Özgöçmen made the following statement:
“The situation has reached its peak. Understand our seriousness and prioritise the health of our people to some extent. The Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister will be directly responsible for every incident that will occur during this process.
“Finally, I would like to state on behalf of our union that the path to compromise and dialogue is still open, but the Prime Minister needs to call us in person by the end of today’s workday to meet with us and take steps to reach a mutual agreement on our legitimate demand. We would like to inform the public and apologise in advance for any problems that may arise”.
