Air traffic controllers joined the general strike on Tuesday. The unions are demanding the restitution of daylight saving time (DST) in the TRNC.
Airport workers went on strike between 08.00 and 15.30 hours yesterday and twenty three flights were cancelled at Ercan airport. The strike was also supported by hospital and customs workers.
On Tuesday morning a trades’ union platform gathered and marched to the Prime Minister’s office demanding that DST be reinstated in the north. The coalition government had taken the decision to follow Turkey’s lead not to put the clocks back by one hour for winter time, in line with the rest of Europe.
Early last Tuesday morning, a fatal road traffic accident occurred in the Kyrenia Mountains when a lorry collided with a school bus carry students. The accident, which claimed the lives of two schoolgirls and a school bus driver and seriously injured seven other students, sparked a huge outcry because the incident was blamed on the fact that light had been poor that morning and the condition of the road was bad. Thousands have called on the government to resign.
The platform comprised Turkish Cypriot civil servants’ trade union (KTAMS), the secondary school teachers’ trade union (KTOEOS), the primary school teachers’ trade union (KTOS), the Turkish workers trade union (TURK-IS), the physicians’ trade union (TIP-IS), the public workers’ trade union (KAMU-IS), the public employees’ trade union (KAMU-SEN), the GUC-SEN trade union, the air controllers union. The “Solidarity” organisation stated that they supported the strike and the protest activities and that they would participate in them.
