The Othello Tower and Citadel in Famagusta reopened yesterday with a bi-communal performance of the Shakespearean tragedy Othello.
The tower was closed in February 2014 as the structure was deemed unsafe and work to refurbish it was put out to tender. Renovations were carried out under the management of the Committee on Cultural Heritage and funded by the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF).
The organisers hoped that the jointly presented play would act as a vehicle to bring the two divided communities closer together.
“We don’t have lots of opportunities for Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots to work together. It’s a very good opportunity to know each other and do something with art together,” said 31 year old actor Vasiliki Andreou.
