Ozersay Discusses UNFICYP With Spehar

North-Cyprus-News-UNFICYPDeputy PM and Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay met with the Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Elizabeth Spehar.

At the meeting, they discussed the contacts made by UNSG’s Special Temporary Adviser to Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute. They also exchanged views on UNFICYP’s activities and the term report regarding UNFICYP’s mandate, to be presented to the UN Security Council in January.

An official statement read that Ozersay and Spehar had discussed the recent tensions in the agricultural areas of Deneia (Denya) and Haspolat border villages. They were attempting to find ways for cooperation in a region where, “the Greek Cypriots were trying to deliberately create tension”, Ozersay said.

There have been incidents reported where Greek Cypriot farmers, claiming that they had been granted access to lands in the buffer zone for farming, had been turned away by the Turkish military.

The statement added that during the meeting, Ozersay brought onto the agenda the Turkish Cypriots side’s proposals for de-mining. He said that they were ready to de-mine the whole island.
