In a written statement by the Eastern Mediterranean University Academic Staff Union (DAÜ-SEN), it was emphasised that the parliamentary deadlock caused by the resignation this morning of the Parliamentary Speaker, Ziya Öztürkler, could be resolved either through consultation within parliament or by calling an early election. However, it stressed that efforts must first be made to reach consensus through consultation before resorting to an early election, Kibris Postasi reported.

Despite the many pressing issues in the country requiring solutions, we have been witnessing a completely pointless parliamentary presidency crisis for a month and a half”, the statement said. It noted that no progress had been made in various areas, including steps needed at EMU.

Speakers Should be Elected With Cooperation From Opposition

The statement highlighted that it was expected for the Parliamentary Speaker and Deputy Speaker to be elected with broad support through consultation between the ruling and opposition parties. It continued:

This is why five rounds of voting have been held. Instead of consulting and achieving a widely accepted consensus, pushing boundaries and imposing decisions is neither reasonable nor rational. Mathematically, it is impossible for the main opposition to elect the Deputy Speaker on its own. Votes from MPs in the ruling parties are also required. Similarly, it seems that electing the Parliamentary Speaker with votes only from MPs of the ruling coalition is not possible. Attempting this is neither necessary nor appropriate. What is correct is to elect the Parliamentary Speaker and Deputy Speaker simultaneously through consultation and consensus, in line with the spirit of the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of Parliament”.

The Country Needs Solutions Not Crises

The statement underlined that the crisis regarding the Parliamentary Presidency and the issue of governance should not be conflated:

Electing the Parliamentary Speaker and Deputy Speaker will not resolve the internal issues faced by the government. These issues must be addressed separately by the coalition parties in line with the principles of clean politics”.

It stressed that the country needed solutions and action rather than crises, and that a government focused on solving problems, not squabbling over seats for months, was required.

In this context, the consultation call by the main opposition Republican Turkish Party is an important step towards a solution. Following this, the action taken this morning by Ziya Öztürkler is extremely significant and meaningful”, the statement concluded.
