The leader of the Democrat Party Serdar Denktaş has welcomed the government’s decision to conduct an inventory of immovable properties in the closed city of Maraş.
In a statement on social media, Denktaş recalled that the political parties had submitted a written report on the issue on July 18, 2017 to both President Mustafa Akıncı and the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
Denktaş also said that it was important to act on the issue without further delay.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Rebirth Party (YDP) Erhan Arikli has welcomed the decision taken by the government regarding the fenced-off city of Maraş.
He said that they will be following the issue closely for its implementation.
In a written statement, Arıklı said that the government’s decision to reopen Maraş for settlement under Turkish Cypriot administration greatly pleased his party.
He said that not only should the rights of the Vakıflar Foundation be sought at the international arena but Maraş should be reopened to its former residents with a special status under the supervision of the UN.
Arıklı also said the rights of the Turkish Cypriot side should be protected in the process.
The leader of the Rebirth party reminded that an economic feasibility report on opening Maraş to resettlement had been prepared by the Greek Cypriot side during the Annan Plan period.
“The authorities have this report and so do we. According to the assessment report, the reconstruction, restoration and rehabilitation of Maraş would require around €2 billion. Maraş will contribute greatly to the TRNC economy as and when it is reopened. Economic life will return to ghost city,” he added.
