A petition has been signed by many Bellapais residents for the removal of the speed cameras on the main Kyrenia – Bellapais road.
The petitioners say that they are fed up with paying speeding fines, and claim that the 50km per hour speed limit on that stretch of road is unrealistic. Some commented that going uphill within the speed limit caused great stress to their car engines. Many also feel that the cameras have primarily been installed to collect fines and not as a safety measure.
If the cameras must stay, they insist that the speed limits be raised.
The petition has been presented to the Ministry of the Interior and local residents await the outcome.
