Governments have received criticism in the past whenever they announced petrol price increases.
To deflect this, prices are now linked to an average of world oil prices.
Oil prices have been going up primarily because they are denominated in dollars and the Turkish lira has weakened significantly against the dollar. In addition oil prices have risen in reaction to any possible spreading of the Syrian conflict.
Turkey has raised its petrol prices twice in the last month for similar reasons.
