On his arrival he said that it had been over ten years since a Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister had made such a visit to the UK. And he thanked everyone for their warm welcome and said:

We wanted to visit our schools and our people who live here. We want to see how our civil society organisations are working. That is why I am being accompanied by various sector representatives. I believe that much can be accomplished with our citizens living here. There is a high potential here in terms of capital and human resources”.

The Prime Minister pictured with his wife Nilden (photo – second on left) attended the screening of a documentary on the life of the first Turkish Cypriot female journalist Bedia Okan Göreli organised by the TRNC London Representation Office on the occasion of 8 March International Women’s Day. Turkish Cypriot women in the UK have recently accomplished remarkable things, he said. “This is a source of pride for us”, he said.

Also attending the International Women’s Day gathering was Middlesex University Professor İlhan Raman (photo – far right). She is one of the most prominent and successful women in the Turkish Cypriot community. She was the first Turkish Cypriot President of the International Federation of Women Associations (FIWAL) and the first woman chairman of the Council of Turkish Cypriot Associations. Nesil Çalışkan (photo- first on left), who in addition to being a female council leader, was the youngest ever person to head a borough council (London borough of Enfield), spoke on International Women’s Day.

Prime Minister Erhurman said that many individual Turkish Cypriots had enjoyed personal success around the word, the PM said, however, the Turkish Cypriot community as a whole had not had a success story of its own. This could only be achieved through solidarity and unity, he said.

The PM is meeting members of the Turkish Cypriot business community in London, today. He will also attend a public meeting with Turkish Cypriots living in London.
