Famagusta police confiscated yesterday 6.5 tons of frozen meat valued at 1 million TL, which was transferred illegally from South Cyprus to Güvercinlik village in Famagusta.
In a large-scale operation on Wednesday, after inspecting the contents of a van, police confiscated the meat and arrested the van driver. The driver appeared at Famagusta disctrict court, which ordered that he remain in custody for two days.
Meanwhile, officials from the health services and customs department took the meat to be destroyed at Famagusta waste grounds. The illegal meat originated from Poland, Denmark and Austria.
