Following the announcement by the Electricity Authority Employees Union (El-Sen) of their plans to cut off the electricity supply to Ercan Airport, which owes Kib-Tek 92 million TL, the police literally formed a human wall in front of the Meriç Transformer Centre, where the disconnection was supposed to take place. Meanwhile, Kib-Tek employees have been arriving at the transformer location.
According to information obtained by a Yeniduzen correspondent, to avoid compromising air traffic safety, the power supply to the Civil Aviation Department will not be cut off, but the passenger lounge will be affected. Speaking with the police, El-Sen President Ahmet Tuğcu stated that they wanted to disconnect the power according to their constitutional rights and regulations, and requested the police to provide a written order preventing them from entering the substation. The police indicated that the order had been given verbally.
In response, Tuğcu commented, “Those who govern the country are using the police to protect Emrullah Turanlı“. The union has criticised the disparity in enforcement, noting that power for the ordinary consumer is cut off for a debt of just 675 TL, while no action is taken against Ercan Airport operator Emrullah Turanlı despite his 92 million TL debt.
Earlier in the week, the union had announced that if Ercan’s debt was not settled by Friday, the power would be cut off. In response, Kib-Tek management stated yesterday that Ercan Airport’s debts would be restructured. However, the union stressed that the agreement was between Kib-Tek and the airport operator, asserting that the debt remained and they would proceed with the disconnection.
El-Sen President Ahmet Tuğcu declared, “You may have agreed not to collect the debts from Emrullah Turanlı (the owner of T&T) and continue covering the deficit from the public’s pocket, but we, as El-Sen, do not agree with you”.
