A pregnant 15-year old girl was found living in squalor with her two-month old child in police lodgings, after neighbours complained of bad smells coming from the building.
Council workers filled two skips with the rubbish that she was surrounded by, in accommodation which had no electricity or running water.
The girl who is Bulgarian, has parents in Bulgaria and she has a fiancé in Turkey; the local social services would not refer her to SOS Children’s Village because she was a foreigner.
Kyrenia Mayor Nidai Gongurdu said that appropriate accommodation for her and her child should be provided by the state. Social Services would be contacted and the local council was ready to offer her temporary accommodation to cover her basic needs.
Volunteeer worker Osman Cin asked people who can lend a hand to donate baby milk, dry food, nappies and children’s clothes for the 15-year-old girl and her baby through VIYAD, a volunteer association in the North.
Reports say that her legal status is complicated and two lawyers have been assigned to help her to travel to Turkey where her fiancé’s family have agreed to take her and the child in.
