President Mustafa Akinci has issued a statement expressing his sorrow over the loss of life and damage to property following the deluges of rain affecting the whole country.
“We have been struck with deep sorrow caused by the flood disaster and the consequent loss of life”, the President said. He expressed the hope that such disasters would never occur again.
He drew attention to the need for better planning and measures required to limit the scale of such events in future.
“The flood disaster our country has experienced, the loss of three of our young people and the fact that one person is still missing, has greatly saddened us”, Akinci said.
Flooding has caused widespread damage across the country, the President said. He noted that all the state institutions were working round the clock to try and clean up the mess.
“I have no doubt that the public will work in solidarity and do all it can to assist these efforts. No doubt the most painful aspect of this disaster is the loss of the lives of our young people. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those who perish and patience to those who have experienced this tragedy”, the President said.
President Akinci said that the whole of society needed to understand the responsibility which fell on everyone to prevent the re-occurrence of such events in the future.
“The duty to carry out the work that needs to be done awaits us as soon as we heal our wounds which have been inflicted by this disaster”, the President said.
