Proposal to remove criminal records to ease TRNC citizenship applications

A proposal has been published in the TRNC’s Official Gazette that individuals with criminal records wanting to apply for TRNC citizenship, should have their criminal record removed. The usual procedure is to automatically reject applicants who have a criminal record.

Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Havadis’ published an article headlined “A dangerous step”, which notes that opposition parties and NGOs have complained about the increased rate of granting TRNC citizenships and that this was yet another step towards bolstering TRNC population numbers.

The law proposed to the assembly by independent MP Mentes Gunduz, will ease the way for foreign applicants who have work permits, permanent residence or permission to establish a business, if their criminal records are expunged, regardless of the nature of the crime or crimes committed.
