Protests Regarding Access to Derinya Beach

Protests have been held demanding access to Derinya beach in Famagusta. Currently, only Turkish Cypriots and Turks are permitted to use the beach.

Three organisations, the Famagusta Initiative, MAGEM [Famagusta Youth Centre] and Unite Cyprus Now have raised objections to the ruling regarding Derinya beach as they did last year.

In a joint written statement, the three organisations have described the practice as “racist”. It was also stressed in the statement, that “steps should be taken for all people who visit the city of Famagusta (Greek Cypriots, tourists, students, immigrants) regardless of their ethnic origin”.

In their statement, they call on the public to boycott Derinya beach until everyone has access to it.

The beach was under the control of the security forces command and only opened in August, 2017.

The decision to open the beach to the public was made by the leadership of the security forces and Famagusta municipality. However, the agreement only allows for Turkish and TRNC citizens to use the beach on presentation of their identity card.
