Pseudo-fowl pest disease crosses border

North Cyprus daily, ‘Kibris’ reported yesterday that an outbreak of pseudo-fowl pest disease (Newcastle disease)* which originated in the South has also influenced border areas near the Green Line such as Guzelyurt, Famagusta and Nicosia.

Saying that hundreds of fowl have already been destroyed, the director of the veterinary department, Huseyin Ataben confirmed that the disease had been seen in the TRNC as well. He described, though, as “pleasing” the fact that pseudo-fowl disease has not occurred in commercial establishments. Ataben said that when there are deaths, his department must be informed.

The director of Veterinary Services in the South said that approximately 60-70 thousand poultry were destroyed last Wednesday as a precautionary measure.

*Newcastle Disease is transmittable by air and by direct contact with an infected bird
