Quarrying continues to claim the lives of workers

Data from the Geology and Metal Department for 2016, shows that a total of 341 permissions have been granted since 1974 for stone quarries in the TRNC. Currently only 31 of them are in operation.

Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Havadis’ notes that the quarries have caused serious environmental damage and have had a negative effect on human health.

The paper also reports on the poor working conditions and safety standards, adding that in the last 14 years, there have been 56 accidents and six deaths at the quarries.
