Refugees fleeing from South to TRNC

The severe economic crisis in South Cyprus and consequent unemployment has led to a new phenomenon; the migration of foreigners to the TRNC.

Apart from British and other foreign nationals looking to move over to the North, there has also been a rise in illegal crossings by refugees. These refugees were receiving state payments in the South but due to the current financial climate and the Greek Cypriot government making cut backs, their benefits have been stopped. Now some of the refugees are being taken over the border illegally to the TRNC by smugglers.

An Iranian family were arrested by soldiers as they attempted to cross over at a prohibited military zone.

The head of the family said that he had paid 6,000 euros for help to cross the border. Police are now investigating this new development in criminal activity
