Refugees rescued off South Cyprus coast

A group of 13 refugees were rescued from a small boat near Ayia Napa on Saturday.

The vessel was sighted carrying four men, three women and six children who are believed to be Syrian, police have reported. Emergency services rescued the group just off the coast of Liopetri.

All of those rescued have been moved to a reception centre and are undergoing medical checks. According to some reports, those on board were members of three families. Two of the women are pregnant and have been moved to Larnaca General Hospital.

At the beginning of September, 115 refugees were rescued off the coast of Larnaca. They were of Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian origin, authorities said.
