The process to register halloumi as a product of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is almost complete, South Cyprus Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis has said.
The application is being translated after passing checks by the EU Commission, after which, the file will be published in the EU’s Official Journal.
On Monday Kouyialis said that the PDO covers the production on the entire territory of the “Republic of Cyprus” and will benefit all producers – including Turkish Cypriots.
Asking the Turkish Cypriots to cooperate with the Greek Cypriots, he said this product would be protected from “unfair international competition”.
North Cyprus wants to have a separate production control mechanism for halloumi/hellim.
