The tripartite summit between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President Akinci and President Anastasiades, which is scheduled to take place on November 25 in Berlin, has created uneasiness in the non-solution circles in the TRNC, Social Democracy Party (TDP) leader Cemal Ozyigit has said.
“The numerous statements by the circles who fear even hearing the word ‘solution’ regarding the summit that is to take place on November 25, is the most concrete indication of this”, Ozyigit said yesterday in a written statement, commenting further on the recent statements made by Prime Minister Ersin Tatar and Foreign Minister Kudret Ozersay.
“It is obvious that the coalition partners in the government are in full harmony on the issue of serving the non-solution in Cyprus”, he added.
Referring to Tatar’s recent remarks, who had called on Akinci to not participate in a new negotiation process or to “take the authority of the assembly” for doing this, Ozyigit described Tatar’s statement as a “product of an anti-democratic mentality”. He underlined that the Turkish Cypriot people have authorised Akinci with their votes to represent them and only this can remove Akinci’s authority.
Ozyigit went on to express the wish for the tripartite summit to produce a positive outcome in order to speed up the process for a federal solution.
“Our greatest wish is for an agreement to be reached on the terms of reference during the tripartite summit and afterwards to proceed to a five-party conference”, Ozyigit said, adding that the Cyprus negotiations should be result-oriented and not open-ended. He added that a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution based on political equality should be the basis for the solution.
“Rotating presidency, political equality and effective participation in power sharing are sine qua non for us”, Oyzigit said.
This is also President Mustafa Akinci’s stance, however, Prime Minister Ersin Tatar has said that following decades of failed Cyprus talks, it is time to negotiate for two sovereign states in Cyprus.
