Russia asks the South for military facilities

South Cyprus is discussing a request from Moscow for facilities in the fight against terrorism in Syria, Russian ambassador Stanislav Osadchiy said on Monday.

Asked if Russia needs facilities on the island, the ambassador said the matter was being discussed with the Cypriot foreign ministry.

Presently, Russia uses Limassol port to refuel its naval vessels. France and Germany use Paphos airbase to refuel, and for evacuation operations and technical services. Britain has been deploying its military jets from RAF Akrotiri in a series of air strikes against ISIL in Syria.

The recent attacks in Paris underline the need for the West and Russia to bury their differences and cooperate in the fight against militants in Syria, Russian politicians have said.
