Work to tow the beached tanker ‘Salim N1’, which ran aground on Gülseren beach, will begin on either Sunday or Monday, according to the Turkish Cypriot Coastal Safety and General Rescue Company Director Yusu Burak.
Mr Burak said they were ready to start the salvage operation when requested by the ship owner or when directed by the Famagusta Port Authority, depending on weather conditions.
According to a TAK new agency correspondent, the Tanzanian-flagged ship, which was unladen, had been anchored off Famagusta Port since 2 December, 2018. Violent storms yesterday caused the vessel’s anchor to drag. The tanker drifted between 500-800 metres and then ran aground on Gülseren beach.
